Halloween Treat

Ghosts and ghouls were out in style on Thursday 29th October, for Hayfield’s 2015 Halloween party in the gym.

Individuals and staff were kept busy, mysteriously making, selecting and shopping for the scariest outfits and props to wear on the day.

Preparations were furtive but ongoing all week, as Joe and Dave planned and put the finishing touches to the ultimately (wooh-hah-hah-hah) scariest venue.  Joe’s huge spider sculpture made a fantastic focal point on the back wall, alongside some projected spooky scenes to add vaporous otherworldliness (amazing how the thesaurus feature can help out an article) to an already excited atmosphere.

As the guys got dressed and were assisted with their fiendish and grisly make-up, their excitement became palpable.

From the realm of angels (Catherine, a vision in white) to 19th Century earth and Sherlock Holmes (David) through the bastions of Hell with Freddie Kruger (John D)  and Kevin (the Scream) –  the guys so looked the part!  Debbie went for a slapstick theme, and her clown costume was fantastic, right down to the squeaky nose, which she invited all to squeeze.  Anna really shone as the ghost-like corpse bride, and Fiona was ethereally beautiful as the Prom Queen with a difference (the difference of course being all the blood and gore dripping from her dress).  Stewart looked fantastically dapper as Cap’n Jack Sparra from Pirates of the Caribbean, and performed a few swashbuckling moves (with a shy smile) on request.

Staff too, joined in the spirit of the afternoon; Christine dressed as a man dressed as a woman aka Mrs Brown with her be-rollered pal in tow (in real life Natalie).  Check out the story of how Christine came about her outfit…a true heart-warming tale of Glasgow kindness, honesty and optimism.

Continuing the trans-identity theme, Carol dressed as Christine, complete with cleaning trolley and a remarkably unattractive wig (I’m surprised Christine let you away with that one Carol) supplied by the drama group’s props box.  Lee was alarmingly surprised at how little make-up it took to reform her actual face into a Bella Lugosi-based Count Dracula, while Billy became Minnie Mouse with apparent alacrity.

Cruella deVille made an appearance (Linda) with an outfit imaginatively and almost entirely composed of drama props, and Tommy, too, pursued a less elaborate costume, along the theme of less-is-more, and actually looked the part of a New York cabbie with the simple addition of one of the drama hats. Joanne and Claire strutted their stray cat stuff and served everyone the gorgeous buffet food which went down a treat.

Ina was thrilled to win Best Costume of the day – and was truly magnificent as Maleficent, while the Grim Reaper took a well-deserved second prize – Charles bringing such gentle persistence to this outfit it felt spookily real.

Rena came along bearing gifts, some truly gruesome-looking yet delicious cup-cakes she had made herself, so a lovely addition to the buffet.  Thanks to the good witch Ann-Marie for arranging the buffet, DJ and games and the whole staff team who came along to help out and enjoy the fun.  There was plenty jiggin’ after the food was scoffed…as well as a few games.  Musical statues showed off some spectacularly expert staying-still-skill, with Leslie the wizard and Cap’n Jack performing with statuesque aplomb.  Irene ultimately triumphed after a determined fight for supremacy in this game… she was a cat after all.
