Practice Standards.

 

Personal and Social Care Needs.

Service Users...

  • Will be involved in identifying their own care and future needs and planning how these will be met.

  • Will receive individual attention from residential and day care staff, and can influence who will provide intimate care.

  • Will be encouraged to maintain and if possible improve their levels of independence.

  • Will receive care in a manner, which respects their wishes, preferences and individuality, as part of their Care Plan.  

  • Will be involved in opportunities to review the care they receive and to agree or initiate change, on a twice yearly basis.

  • Will be entitled to have the advice and support of family, carers, social workers or other advocates in their review process.

  • Will have their health care needs assessed and met by appropriate professionals.

  • Will receive care and support from a stable staff team.

  • Will receive care from a skilled and experienced staff team.

 

Residential Environment.

Service Users...

  • Will be encouraged and assisted to furnish and decorate their rooms to their individual tastes, including the provision of their own furniture or individual items.

  • Views will be sought and taken account of in relation to the furnishing and redecoration of communal areas.

  • Will have access to a range of rooms for different activities.

  • Will be able to move between private and communal areas with ease.  

  • Dignity is recognised by appropriate & sensitive housekeeping practices, including personal responsibility for the upkeep of their private space.

  • Will be able to control heating, lighting and ventilation in their bedrooms.

 

Safety and Security.

Service Users...

  • Their carers and the referring authority will have information, which assures them that the establishment operates within legal and accountable structures.

  • Will have information about conditions of stay and about policies regarding discharge, hospitalisation and transfer relayed to them in an appropriate medium.

  • Information regarding contracts, fees and unit policies will be discussed and made available to service users, carers and the referring authority.

  • Will live in an establishment whose layout, equipment and practices contribute to a safe environment for themselves, staff and visitors.  
    This will include the provision of visual and tactile alerts as appropriate.

  • Staff and visitors are protected from the hazards of fire, including the provision of visual and tactile alerts.

  • Will live in surroundings that are adapted to meet their changing needs and minimise dependence on staff.

  • Will have the opportunity to move to alternative locations as their needs change.

  • Should be confident that all reasonable steps will be taken to ensure their personal safety and the security of their belongings.

  • Will have details of a complaints procedure, which includes reference to someone outwith the establishment who can deal with their concerns.  This will be explained to them in an appropriate medium, as well as being available to them in writing.

  • Should be confident that if discrimination occurs on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality or disability, it  will be dealt with promptly.

  • Should know that there is a policy of not applying physical or other methods of restraint, except as a last resort and by staff who are appropriately trained (CALM).  Referral to the police or other authorities may be made if necessary.  

 

Privacy and Respect.

Service Users...

  • Wishes regarding privacy will be sought and respected by staff.

  • Will be addressed and referred to in respectful and appropriate terms.

  • Should be aware that everything possible will be done to free them from exposure to undue public attention or unwelcome intrusion.

  • Will be aware of and have appropriate access to documentation maintained about them, and where necessary they will have this communicated to them in an appropriate medium.

  • Will be satisfied that personal information about them is treated confidentially.  

  • Will be able to undertake intimate activities in private.  

  • Will be able to meet people, have conversations, make or receive telephone calls, correspond and receive visitors without being overlooked or overheard, and without unwarranted intrusion.

  • Private rooms will be fitted with visual alert systems that will be used to gain their attention prior to entry.

  • Will be free to come and go without hindrance and without having to justify their activities, within the terms of their individual care plan.

 

Choices and Rights.

Service Users...

  • Will be assumed capable of making choices and decisions, within the scope of their abilities, as outlined in their individual care plan.

  • Will be encouraged and enabled to make responsible choices.

  • Will be appropriately enabled to choose the daily routines and lifestyle they wish to pursue, in accordance with their individual care plan.

  • Will be provided with information about the establishment philosophy, policies and rules, which may limit their personal freedom, communicated to them in an appropriate medium.

  • Will have access to a kitchen and be encouraged and helped to participate in the preparation and purchase of food and drinks.

  • Food and drink preferences will be actively sought and included in menus, in accordance with their individual care plan which may take account of specialist health and dietary requirements.

 

Personal Responsibility.

Service Users...

  • Will be encouraged and enabled to maintain their responsibilities and obligations as citizens.

  • Will be recognised and valued as unique individuals.

  • Aspirations will be acknowledged and promoted.

  • Will be able to exercise their own judgment and be helped to act in their own best interests, within the potential of their abilities.

  • Will be permitted and enabled to participate in activities and relationships, which may involve a degree of risk.

  • Will be encouraged to maintain control over their financial affairs, within the limits of their understanding and ability.

  • Will have some money for their own use each week and have access to their own money.

  • Will exercise control over health matters and medication where it is recognised that they are able to do so.

     

Wider Environment.

Service Users...

  • Will live in an environment where there are opportunities for fun and pleasure.

  • Will have opportunities to discuss their interests, skills and abilities with staff and this information will be used appropriately.

  • Will be able to maintain existing contacts and relationships and to make new ones.

  • Will have access to information about activities & amenities in & outwith the establishment, communicated to them in an appropriate medium.

  • Will be encouraged in all aspects of their education, vocational training, employment or occupational interests, as identified in their individual care plan.

  • Will be able to participate in activities associated with social, recreational, spiritual & cultural interests, with appropriate supports.

  • Will be encouraged to make use of external educational or training programmes.

  • Personal hobbies or interests will be encouraged by the involvement of external groups or individuals, with appropriate supports.
