Day
Care is an integral part of Hayfield’s service provision.
Where the main
function of our work is to assist our service users to maximise their full
individual potential.
|
|
|
|
Deaf
people referred to Hayfield’s day care facility
undergo an initial assessment period -
usually six weeks. This mostly takes the form of observational work between the service user,
day care instructor and if appropriate their residential key worker.
If
it is deemed necessary during or after the assessment period, the service
user will be referred to an Educational Psychologist for external
professional input to help establish their level of ability.
Following
the assessment procedure, we are then in a position to draw up a package
of care tailored to the individual and to place that person in a group
setting appropriate to their level.

Hayfield’s
day care facility operates Monday to Friday. Each day follows a
structured programme where work is carried out on educational
reinforcement, independent living and social skills, as well as leisure
and recreational activities.
This
programme is delivered by Day Care Instructors, trained in the
use of British Sign Language a fundamental communication requirement which underpins
all areas of our work.
The
first objective is to build confidence and self-esteem, which is very
often lacking when service users first come to Hayfield. Once a
trusting relationship is formed, the service user is able to progress at their own pace. |
|
|
|
Central
to our daily work is the promotion of independence for each service user as far
as is practicable, regardless of their ability. Each
person is treated as an individual who can contribute to the decisions which affect their lives. They are actively
encouraged to access community services such as Health Centres, Colleges,
Cinemas, Deaf Clubs, Libraries, Sport / Leisure Centres and Public
Transport. |

As
each service user gains new skills & abilities they will move to the
next level of development, the various group settings used in Day Care allow this progression to take place. Service users themselves see
this as tangible recognition of their personal development & success.
As a condition of their stay here, service users
can attend regular internal review meetings with Hayfield care staff, their
social worker and family members.
At the end of such
meetings the aim is to give the service user positive feedback, to
recognise the efforts they have made and to encourage them in the future.

|
Hayfield
measures the effectiveness of its service when we see an individual,
progress from perhaps the most basic level initially, to the point where he or
she feels able to interact positively within the Hayfield setting. At this
juncture, we support them to be happy and comfortable within their surroundings,
secure in the knowledge that staff are there to assist them at all times to
develop and grow, and most importantly - happy and contented in themselves as a
person.
